I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday filled with love, peace and joy.
Last evening I looked into the cold crisp clear New England sky and what a beautiful sight. The moon was very small sliver and just below a beautiful, incredibly bright star. I looked to the right of the moon and there were stars in the shape of a cross. I never noticed those stars before. I’m sure they’ve been there all along, but not being as bright as the moon they went by unnoticed.
It really touched me to think that these were the same stars once followed by the three wise men on their quest to find the Christ child so many years ago in Bethlehem. I thought about the faith of those three wise men and their journey to what they believed to be their salvation with only a star to guide them. (No “Garmins’ or ‘Tomtoms’ back then!)
Then I started to think about the holiday as we celebrate it today. Every child knows about Santa and gifts, cards, decorations, trees, wreaths, and big dinners with hot cocoa. How many of us think of the Christ Child when the word Christmas is said? Most all of us think about the chubby guy in the bright red suit riding around in a sleigh pulled by Reindeer! Now be honest…most people think immediately of Christmas presents, either what we get or what we give. It’s been a part of our culture for so long it is the holiday!
The true gift of Christmas is you and your spirit of giving, not only at the holiday season, but all year through. To give of yourself. To give selflessly without thought of anything in return. The kindness we show to strangers. The spirit of generosity, not in material things, but in our spirit of every-day-living. The hand up to those less fortunate than ourselves. These are the true gifts of the season and the law of the universe.
I wish Love Hope Peace and Joy to all this Christmas and every day of the year. For my friends of other faiths, I wish you the same
