Happy Cinco De Mayo May 5th, 2009

Today is Cinco De Mayo. Quite a big holiday in Mexico. We drink and party to celebrate the day, but what is it all about?

The Mexican army defeated the french in a little town called Puebla in 1862. So why is it such a big holiday in the United States as well?  You can read more about the battle by following this link

The French had twice as many men in their army and the most modern equipment of the time to fight with. So how did the Mexicans defeat the French? They had determination and desire to win. Their reason to fight was more intense than the French. The French had underestimated the Mexicans and chased them to their demise.

Armed basically with machetes the Mexicans dispelled the French and in turn the French could not join the confederate rebel forces in United States Civil War which was their main objective. Fourteen months later the Union Army won the battle at Gettysburg which ended the war. In turn the United States joined forces with Mexico, to eradicate the French occupation of Mexico. Later when Pearl Harbor was attacked the Mexicans jumped accross the border to join the U.S. army in the fight against the Japanese.

The alliance was formed in freedom and liberty and that is why we celebrate Cinco De Mayo today!
