Millionaires

A very successful internet marketer was being interviewed by a reporter of the Wall Street Journal as part of a series of articles about millionaires in today’s business and industry…

Reporter: “To what do you owe your millionaire status?”

Millionaire: “I owe my millionaire status all to my wife. Without her, I could never have become what I am today.”

Reporter: “May I ask what you were before you met your wife?”

Millionaire: “A Billionaire!”

Keep Your Eye on the Prize

Ya know… All this semantic debate! Desire vs. Resolve–Passion vs. determination– Business vs. Hobby–Why vs. Try etc. can be summed up in a lesson learned from a child.

Sometimes as adults we tend to get all caught up in following rules (set by others), cynical analysis, fear (that we have accumulated from life’s experiences), making excuses, blaming others for our failures, bad habits, and ‘comfort zones’. Perhaps we should look at a  child’s story to show us how simple problem-solving can be.

If you have ever been around a toddler then you know how determined they can be when they want something badly enough. I will share a short story with you that I think about when I need to overcome my own obstacles.

Robbie, a typical 3-yr. old is having his favorite dinner, and who shows up? — Uncle Rob! Now Robbie knows uncle ALWAYS has something special for him when he visits. Now, needless to say, eating dinner is not top on Robbie’s priority list.

He runs away from the dinner table to his uncle looking for his present. Mom scolds Robbie and makes him return to the table to finish his dinner. Robbie pouts and sulks, crosses his arms and glares at his mother and refuses to eat any more of his dinner until Uncle gives him his present.

After mom’s best attempt at discipline (and cursing the timing of her brother’s visit) finally agrees to let Uncle give Robbie his present if Robbie promises to eat his dinner. So excited to get his present the boy will promise anything. So he promises.

Robbie jumps from the table, runs to his uncle and rummages through Uncle’s pockets to find the biggest ‘all-day-sucker’ he had ever seen in his young life.

Uncle Rob looks apologetically at his sister and she looks back with a look of anguish. Robbie is in a state of frenzy trying to remove the wrapper from the sucker.Mom promptly  takes the sucker from Robbie and places it on the counter and reminds Robbie of his promise, sits him back at the table and tells him he may not have the sucker until he finishes his dinner.

Of course Robbie protests short of a tantrum, but all of a sudden calms down and looks over at the counter and simply leaves the table to retrieve the sucker, comes back to the table and smiles at his mother.

She is very upset so she takes the sucker and as punishment tells Robbie he broke his promise and could not have the sucker until after he finished his meal. There is such chaos that she finally puts the sucker in the cabinet above the refrigerator and insists he eat his dinner.

Well, after some argument Robbie realizes he is not going to get anywhere, eats three more bites and announces he is done eating.

“You still have half your food on your plate-you are not finished” ,mom says. Looking to the fridge Robbie says,”I’m full I can’t eat anymore. I’m done”. Mom tells Robbie he is excused and he runs to the fridge pointing to the top and wants his sucker. Mom reminds him he did not keep his promise and may not have the sucker until tomorrow.

Well, now he turns to his uncle for support, but to his surprise Uncle takes mommy’s side and Robbie is completely out of trump (Daddy is out of town on a business trip). Crying and pleading are getting him nowhere fast. Uncle won’t help. Mommy won’t budge.

“O.K.”, Robbie says, much to his mother’s surprise, and leaves to find his tricycle, starts riding around the house until Uncle starts to leave. Robbie hugs and kisses Uncle good-bye, thanks him for his gift and scoots into the kitchen while his mom is saying good-bye to her brother.

In the short time it took for mom to say good-bye, Robbie had climbed a chair, then used a drawer as a stair to stand on the counter, pulled a tin from the cupboard to stand on and climbed onto the top of the fridge. He then opened the cabinet, found his sucker, unwrapped it and was sitting on the top of the fridge licking his sucker, unconcerned with any consequence, when mom returned to the kitchen.

Having desire, resolve, passion, willpower, determination, plans, goals are all important. But having skills, being creative,  exhausting every resource and taking swift action are the key factors to many success  stories.

Ask yourself something at the end of the day…“How bad do you want that ‘all-day-sucker’, and what are you willing to do to get it?”.
